the reporter recently learned from tongzhou district that the renovation of beijing bishui wwtp, which treats 84% of tongzhou’s wastewater, has started at the original site. the renovated wwtp will be an enclosed underground facility with capacity reaching 180,000 t/d, and effluent meets beijing’s newly released class b standards. the main body of the plant is expected to be completed and put into operation in june next year. on the original plant site, a picturesque park covering an area of over 100 mu (roughly 6.7 ha.) will be built for the recreation of the citizens.
at present, the plant’s 340 mu (roughly 22.8 ha.) wastewater treatment pond located at the north of zuanchang village, liyuan town has been divided to northern and southern ponds by a cofferdam. the northern pond has been surrounded by red wire fences, with construction machinery being ready on the bank. according to the head of the project, the 130 mu (roughly 8.7 ha.) northern pond will be drained and dredged soon for the construction of the new wwtp.
bishui wwtp was established in 2002 and officially put into operation in april 2005. a large open aeration treatment pond with a designed capacity of 100,000 t/d was used to treat 84% of tongzhou’s urban wastewater.
through scientific investigation and discussion, the government decided to build a world-leading 180,000 t/d fully-enclosed underground wwtp. with higher treatment capacity and effluent quality, the new plant will also completely solve the odor and noise problems that plague the residents.
all structures of the plant will be built underground, leaving the ground area for a sports park, a water environment science education base for public (especially young people) education, a water environment and ecological technology r&d base, and a water environment ecology museum.
after the new plant is completed and put into use, the original plant will be completely shut down, and the southern pond will no longer be used. the southern pond will be drained and dredged, and filled with clean water. according to the preliminary plan, the southern pond will be transformed into an ecological water park of more than 200 mu (roughly 13.4 ha.), matching with the northern park. it is said that the new plant will be put into use at the end of june next year, and the ground park and structures will be completed by the end of next year.
